I wanted to take my 11 year old son on the trip of a lifetime. I have always wanted to fish the Labrador wilderness. Catching a brook trout in the wild weighing 8lbs or more is a serious trout!! So a started to put this adventure together 2 years ago. I booked with Fins & Fur Adventures owner Carroll Ware. He was a huge help. Osprey Lake Labrador is over 1,000 miles north of my home in Franklin Mass. It is a fly fishing only lake. We met Carroll and another guest Adam Cates in Skowhegan Maine 240 miles north of our home. We drove to Quebec Canada from there, another 180 miles. We flew to Goose bay Labrador from there and then took an otter to our camp. Total travel time was 14 hours.

We hit the water only hours after we touched down. The very first brookie was mine at 6lbs 12 oz!! My son Mike lost one we guess around 5lbs or so. The next morning we started fishing again and before you knew it Mike was fast into a monster brookie on a orange muddler. I almost lost my mind when it surfaced next to the boat! It looked like it might go 10lbs. Well it was 25" long and weighed 8lbs 4oz.

Between the two of us we boated 22 brookies. Mike caught three at 8lbs or better. Only 4 were in the 4lb class. Carroll has been trying to catch a 10lb native brook trout his whole life. In fact it is on his to do in life list!!! He did it his first night with a monster 10lb 4oz brookie. There were 4 brook trout over 10 caught the week we were there topped off by an absloute giant of 11lbs. The brook trout averaged 7lbs+ for the camp. These brook trout were left here when the glaciers retreated thousands of years ago.

The fishing was just unreal. We were told before the brookies average 51/2 lbs but this year for some reason the trout were fewer but much larger on average!! Everyone at the lodge caught an 8lb or better brookie. Thats 8 anglers total at the Lodge. I was the last to break 8lbs. I did it on my 2nd to last night and i did it in style with a bomber on the surface. The next morning i topped it with a 9lb monster on an orange muddler. This was an incredible trip for me to enjoy with my son!!! An adventure we will never forget!!
