Fishing Report 7-22-05

Ed Stanley with a 4 lb. brown. An old friend of mine from Half Moon Bay, Ca., Ed Stanley was up on vacation and with his friend George, joined me for a day on the water in Newberry Crater. We hit East early and did well on browns working a hole I like on the West side of the lake. We were graphing fish at 25 to 40 feet in water of 40 to 65 feet. The browns seem to be pretty much set up in the summer pattern of hanging out in the thermocline right now.

We got on the water by 5:30 but the bite didn't really get hot until around 6:30. We did real well on a Luckycraft Pointer jigging leadcore at 5 colors. I was working some custom painted Lymans and Rapala J-13's on the downrigger rod. It was interesting to see the leadcore out produce the downrigger by a 3-1 margin. Something I wasn't expecting. When the bite slowed down around 10:00 a.m. we had caught and released 24 browns between 13 to 23 inches. The biggest brown was Ed's 4 lb. beauty that we released.
The highlight of the day's fishing was having two browns hit the same lure....pretty cool! This has never happened to me in 50 years of fishing until this year and it has happened twice....a kin to a double eagle in golf!

"Two for one" Like hitting the lottery! After lunch we hit Paulina looking for some kokanee to take home but the afternoon was double tough and we didn't get any. Definitely seemed like a morning bite only.

Tight Lines, Rick
