Gill and Gift Report - December 16, 2011

David Sigaty modestly sports his 24 plus Gerrard Nov 22 2011. What a beauty Dave!

The end of November already……….. Kaslo held their annual Rainbow derby on the Nov 11th long weekend and three more nice fish were brought in by the winners. Frasier Watson won with a 21 LB. 7 oz. fish Todd Lindburg took 2nd with a 21lber and Harry Popoff third with a 19lb. Honorable mention to Grant Sutherland who was in third place for a while with a 18 +lber. Surprisingly all are local boys I guess all the practice helped. I believe that first place money was around $3000. Great derby guys!!! all reports have been positive and everyone is looking forward to next year.

Water temp is 48 degrees so bucktails are still the favorite lure, black/whites combos, both Nov. Blacks and Nov specials, caveman, 215s, green sided gill, 203s, 214, 221, 223. The root bear or Halloween was working but haven’t heard too much about it as of late. Plug wise the black/purples, black/whites, #16, and some of the greens and blues have also been working. Apexes same combo’s purple/black, black/pearl, green/pearl, and even some chromes.

A few of the Nov fish include a 24lb for Dave S., a 19+ for Tony B.,

I have to thank Dave Kimble for the great article and pictures in BC Outdoors about cold water fishing in Kootenay Lake. The winter fishery can be the most rewarding as well as the most frustrating, you seem to watch the same rock on shore for hours then all of a sudden your best plans pay off as line rips off your reel and you are into a big rainbow. The Billie’s are the weapon of choice during the cold water months but big fish have also been taken on bucktails as well as Lyman’s and Tomic’s.

Water temp as of Nov 28 was about 44 degrees and the fishing continues to be great.

H.D. Thoreau says this about fishing...

"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."

Befitting the season here is something to ponder..... In one of His greatest fishing performances, He didn't make a single cast. He simply stood on the bank and asked several professional fishermen if they caught any fish. Embarrassed, they answered, "No!" For you see, they had been fishing all night and did not recognize Him. He then told them where to cast. And, after following His advice, they literally loaded the boat with big fish. I don't know any professional who could do that today. This pro's name is Jesus and the story you just read about is in the Bible under the book of John, chapter 21, verses 1-14.

Have a wonderful Happy Holiday and do not forget the New Years Day Derby coming up. Again we will be closing the store for the day and the boys will all be going out fishing. Come down ahead of time and toss your 20 in the hat and see who will split it at the end of the day for longest bow and longest dolly.
