East Lake Report, July 7-10, 2011

Took my buddy, Dave Rossberg, out for a morning on East Lake. This 4 LB. brown was one of 13 we caught that morning.

I finally got the chance to take my buddy, Dave Rossberg, on a long overdue fishing trip. We have been planning this for some time now. Part of the delay was the logistics of getting him in and out of the boat. Dave has had some recent setbacks with the amputation of his leg and surgery on his foot due to his Diabetes. We were finally able to coordinate the timing of it all and got his friend Paul to join us from Portland for a morning on East Lake.

It was a little bit of a workout getting everybody on board but we did have just enough room for the three of us and the wheel chair. I convinced them to get out early so we were on the water around 5:00 a.m. A little bit of a weather front had passed through the night before and it had cooled down some and clouded up as well.

I was hoping to put some of the G2 jigger gear through a workout but with the wind and the lack of room in the boat, I would be sticking to working my standard gear. It started out slow but we finally got into some great action around 8:00 with a nice 4 LB. brown. For the next hour and a half, we got into a good bite with a dozen browns coming to the boat, many in the 3-4 Lb. range.

The highlight of the day came when Paul hooked up on a monster brown that worked him over for a while before we got it to the boat. Unfortunately, the big hookjaw, easily estimated at over 10 LB., turned and shot to the bottom right before I was going to net it. The plug pulled out and shot back out of the water and over our heads leaving us all a little dumbfounded. It was the second brown over 10 LB. I had to the boat in about a month! I jokingly told him he would have bad dreams for days after losing that one.

I think we ended up with 13 browns landed and 2 nice ones that got off.......a fun morning for sure! We decided to head in for lunch when the wind picked up and called it a day.

I am heading up to Montana this week for a vacation and will get a chance to see Glacier Park, Flathead lake and Kookanusa Lake while we spend time with friends that live in Kalispell. Really looking forward to this trip!

Look for some reports from Wickiup when I return.

Tight Lines,
Rick
